welcome to the Society of Labour lawyers

Since 1948 the Society of Labour Lawyers has developed new legal policies for successive Labour Governments. It formulates changes in the law and in the justice system to help bring about a more just and equitable s society. It provides a meeting ground for lawyers in the Party and a focus for legal concerns throughout the Labour movement.

Members of the Society include practitioners, students and magistrates, as well as distinguished specialists and lawyer politicians. Subject groups draw on specialist, academic and day-to-day experience to develop ideas in all areas of the law.

Specialist groups currently maintain close links with the Parliamentary Labour Party and provide a conduit for the views of Party members in crime, employment, environment, family, the media, corporate and finance matters, health and safety, and social security. The Society’s publications have shaped many law reforms by Labour governments.

Society events include a weekend conference, evening speaker meetings, fringe events at the party conference and an annual dinner.

Many activities are held in London, and there are active regional groups who hold meetings and other events around the country.

Specialist groups are open to all members of the Society, and all contributions are welcome. Students and trainees can also take part in the Young Labour Lawyers own programme.

The Society of Labour Lawyers is an affiliated Socialist Society and sends a delegate to the annual Labour Party Conference. Membership is open to lawyers, law students and magistrates who are members of the Labour Party.
