May Chair’s Report

It was fantastic to have members of SLL campaigning alongside the other Socialist Societies affiliated to the Labour Party in the local elections at the start of May including on the Socialist Societies dialogue telephone canvassing session. We look forward to coming together in person to campaign in the Wakefield by election campaign this coming Saturday.

This month saw a wonderful and well attended in person event in Parliament discussing our Advice Scheme for the Shadow Front Bench. Shadow Attorney General, Emily Thornberry MP and Shadow, Solicitor General Andy Slaughter MP as well as other Shadow Justice Ministers Afzal Khan MP and Lord Falconer attended along with Chair of the Labour Party, Anneliese Dodds and thanked the Society of Labour Lawyers for all our work. The event affirmed and underscored the value of the Society in enabling the Labour Party to hold the Government to account as well as looking ahead to planning for the next Labour Government.

The Housing Group held an excellent online event on “How Labour could Level Up Britain”, exploring local devolution and planning solutions and the Junior Labour Lawyers had an event on how the UK Supreme Court works.

As always the regular SLL advice for the shadow front bench continued including on the Public Order Bill and protest powers for Yvette Cooper MP, the Equality Act and single sex spaces for Anneliese Dodds MP, Joint Enterprise for Andy Slaughter MP.

It was also brilliant to see our Dan Jones elected as one of the Socialist Societies representatives on the Labour Party’s National Policy Forum at our Socialist Societies Executive Meeting.

We look forward to what June holds in store including the London Legal Walk on 28th June.
